My mom is coming to visit next weekend! Yay! This is a good compromise since I can’t go home until the semester is over. She wants to see the cherry blossoms, and I miss my family.
It also seems that my beloved Coco started to get sick from his dog food. Given that my dog is the definition of a glutton and regularly chomps down on aluminum cans without so much as a stomach ache, Mom got concerned when he got sick. She did some research and discovered that there are reports that dry dog food is also tainted with more than 200,000 possible cases. Did anyone know that Menu Foods manufactures almost every brand of dog food out there from cheap Old Roy at Wal-mart to the expensive brands only sold in vet’s offices?
So what do my parents do for the incredibly spoiled border collie? McGuyver Dad pulls out his old vet school books and finds a recipe for homemade dog food. Yes, my mother is making fresh dog food for the Coco each day. But these aren’t scraps from the dinner table. She pulled out the crock pot and is feeding him ground meat mixed with corn, peas, carrots, rice, boiled eggs and green beans. Dad even bought ground turkey so Coco would have a little variety in his diet.
Folks, my dog is eating better than I do. A typical meal for me is tomato soup and a ham pita sandwich or a salad. It’s sad that my dog enjoys a higher standard of living than I do.
Growing up, Coco and the now-deceased Rascal, were required to live downstairs. Dad built a gate and they had the run of the kitchen and den. They also had a fenced-in back yard and a doggy door for their (our) convenience. They ate dry kibble and occasionally got dog treats when they could weedle them out of us. Coco, an obedience school dropout, was forced to sit and lay down for his treats. If I begged or there was a thunderstorm or fireworks, Coco was allowed to sleep with me.
Things gradually changed after Rascal passed away last year, and I moved. Coco, now has an upstairs bed and a downstairs bed. He follows Mom everywhere and sleeps in their bedroom. The little thief can open the pantry door, and he helps himself to dog treats whenever the fancy strikes him. Coco goes on regular rides and trips to the dog park. Today he got frozen custard from Nana’s. I love Nana’s, and they were closed the last time I was at home.
I’m officially jealous of my dog.
